Fast vs. Cleanse vs. Detox

There are lots of fasts, cleanses and detox diets out there on the internet. Everyone wants to tell you about their new green smoothie the amazing diet they found, where you only eat bananas and pecans. Let’s clear up some of the confusion about dieting and detox.

Fasting

During a fast, one usually abstains from all food for a period of time. Some fasts call for just water, while others allow for tea or other light drinks. While this sounds like the ultimate way to clean out your system, it can actually have the opposite effect. Without food, your body thinks it is starving, and instead of flushing out all of your toxins, your system gets stressed out, and your cortisol and blood sugar levels actually rise. Additionally, most people end up eating lots of unhealthy foods after coming after a fast.

Juice Cleanse

In juice cleanse, one subsists off of only fruit and vegetable juice for around a week, in attempt to lose weight or clean out their digestive system. Because you are only getting the sweet juice of the fruit or vegetable, and not the fiber, juice cleanses can cause your blood sugar to spike, and your metabolism to slow. Noticeable other side effects are headaches, weakness, lightheadedness, and nausea.

Detox Diets

During detox diet, one usually eats a limited diet, for any where from 3 days to 3 weeks. Most diets limit fat, and eliminate sugar and dairy. If you are looking do a little gastrointestinal spring cleaning, this is the route I would recommend.
